1.0 Farming & Tool Improvements - Frontier News
2026-09-25Another Friday, another Frontier News! 1.0 is fast approaching, and there's still lots left to talk about. Today, we're talkin' farming! Our goal with farming is to be easy to understand, engaging to think about and plan, and rewarding to get right. For 1.0, we're making a number of changes and improvements to achieve this goal. Crop Rotation Changes We're making changes to how crop rotation works, and how we display it! The goal of the crop rotation system is to reward players for planning and putting thought into where they plant their seeds, while also not punishing those who just want to kick back and plant whatever they want. Ideally it should be easy to understand and keep track of, challenging your thinking skills and not your memory skills. So far, we haven't fully nailed this. We see two main factors here:

• The rewarding feeling is lacking because Mutated crops are more limited than normal crops. Sometimes, getting Mutated crops can even feel like an annoying accident • The different soil combinations are hard to remember, especially since crops can take many days to grow We're making some changes to address these issues. First off, you'll now get both Mutated and normal crops when harvesting Mutated crops. This should make Mutated crops feel like a bonus rather than an unwelcome surprise! Secondly, you'll be able to preview the results of planting on your HUD. This removes the memory aspect of crop rotation and allows you to focus entirely on the yield. Taken together, these changes should make crop rotation both more rewarding to engage with and easier to follow. Prepare for more farming when the 1.0 update drops later this year! Fertilizer Changes We're adding two new Fertilizers, and dividing them into two categories. The current Fertilizers that switch the Mound Types to Phosphoric, Nitrogenic, and Potassic will now be called Mulch. The new Fertilizers will instead increase the yield of a Mound, without changing its Type. Together with Seed Stacking, this will massively increase your farming output! The Compost Box is also switching names to Fertilizer Infuser, and we're adding a Fertilizer Infuser II to scale up production. Tool Secondary Abilities Improvements Secondary abilities for Tools are now baked into their upgrade progression instead of needing to be unlocked via Mods. We've also made some improvements to how they work. Seed Shooter Lock-On & Seed Stacking Starting from Mk. 2, the Seed Shooter can easily target multiple Mounds at once using the Lock-On secondary ability, which has been improved to be a lot faster. Starting from Mk. 4, the Seed Shooter will also be able to plant more than one Seed in the same Mound. We're calling this Seed Stacking, and it allows you to get a lot more crops out of your Mounds, especially when combined with the new Fertilizers. Another cool addition is the Minigun mod, which you can learn more about here. Spike Saw Sweep Starting from Mk. 2, the Spike Saw can hit multiple things at once using the Sweep, which has been improved to be a lot smoother and more satisfying. The Spike Saw will now sweep back and forth continuiously instead of resetting to its original position between each swing. Spike Saw Weak Points When using the Spike Saw, Weak Points will now appear on destructible objects. Attack the Weak Points for massive damage! This adds an optional element of skilled play to resource gathering. The size of Weak Points and amount of extra damage can be increased via new Mods. Vacuum Harvester Harvest Vortex Starting from Mk. 2, the Vacuum Harvester can pull crops straight out of the ground using the Harvest Vortex! Irrigation Hose Hydro Splash Starting from Mk. 2, the Irrigation Hose can more efficiently water large fields using the reworked Hydro Splash secondary ability. Sprout Cannon Volley Starting from Mk. 2, the Sprout Cannon can plant multiple Sprouts at the same time using the Volley secondary ability. New crops 1.0 includes several new crops! Some are in new areas, while others have been added to existing areas. They are: • Cloudbud • Coilvine • Papristalk • Quartznip New Seed and Water markers We're changing the markers that show when Mounds need water or can be seeded. The new markers are easier to see, especially on large fields. Tractor Mode Adjustable Width If you have Mods installed that increase the width of your Tractor modes, you will now be able to adjust the width while using the Mode! Giant Tree Sprouts Giant Tree Sprouts can be unlocked by finishing Ulf's missions. Craft them in the Seed Splicer for a huge boost to your wood supply! Animal improvements Dealing with Animals should feel rewarding, especially since their resources are needed both for Deliveries and for Fertilizer and Mulch. As such, we've made changes both big and small to make them easier and more fun to handle. Farm Animals • Farm Animals no longer run away when Unhappy • Lost Farm Animals now turn up in Diane's sanctuary after a day • Petting a happy Farm Animal now immediately drops their resource (once per day per animal) • Added markers on the map for Farm Animals • The Animal Friend Coziness Buff can now trigger when petting a happy Farm Animal • Increased the Farm Animal daily resource drop rates: Increased Happy from 1 to 3, increased Content from 50% chance of a drop to 1 guaranteed, Unhappy stays at • Made Farm Animals easier to care for: Needs met requirement for Content status reduced from 3 to 2, needs met requirement for Happy status reduced from 5 to 4 Wild Animals • Wild Animals now have a 5% chance to drop their species' eggs when fed • Wild Animals now drop their animal resource when fed instead of a random resource from their region Eggs We're also making some changes to improve the experience of finding normal Eggs! We saw that Rare Eggs had ironically ended up being more common to find in the world than normal eggs, which ...well, kinda goes against the idea of them being rare. Eggs will now spawn... • Each day • Regardless of region status, so you won't have to clean up trash first • Close to Animal Nests, and more wild Animals will be nearby to make the Nests easier to find • In updated locations in the Grassland, Canyon, and Mountain areas These changes mean that normal eggs will be easier to get, allowing you to raise lots more Farm Animals than before.
